The Idaho 5 Goldback honors the virtue Clementia, meaning mercy, gentleness, or stewardship. The artwork shows a moment of quiet renewal set in the Wallace Mountains after the Great Fire of 1910. Clementia kneels on scorched ground, replanting young saplings where the forest once stood. A small fawn stands beside her, representing the return of innocence and life, despite devastation. An empty patera rests near her hand as a symbol of mercy. The scene reflects Idaho’s strength, patience, and responsibility to the land.

The Great Fire, often called the Big Burn, remains one of the most devastating wildfires in American history. It burned millions of acres across northern Idaho and neighboring states, destroying entire towns, like Wallace, Avery, and others that were never rebuilt. For Idahoans, the fire is remembered as both a tragedy and a turning point. It reshaped forest management, elevated firefighters as heroes, and helped establish modern wildfire policy and conservation efforts through the U.S. Forest Service.

This design reflects how Idaho responded in that moment. Replanting, rebuilding, and learning to steward the land more wisely. Clementia embodies that renewal, honoring Idaho’s resilience and legacy. The enduring principle written along the bottom comes from Isaiah 61:3: “Beauty for ashes.”
