Desert Flats

October 3rd, 1887 — Desert Flats
Silver from the stage at Dry Fork Canyon counted and split even. Twelve hundred ounces in all, plus gold currency and one watch. Isaiah kept the watch, seeing as he took it off the stage driver.
Sixty bags of dirt full of gold concentrates and the gold currency left together, tucked safe where no one looks. Only the silver split. half to me, half to Isaiah, each to hide separate.
Still need to find the right place for mine. Didn’t consider the canyon. River’ll run when the rains come but reckon there’s a spot up in the rocks. Ought to ride back and look when things quiet some.
No touching an ounce of mine till the heat’s off. Could be weeks, maybe months. Best keep to the flats, keep our heads down, and ride only at night till it feels safe enough to show our faces again. Hard country out here, but better than a noose.
Mind your wits. No second chances if you get sloppy.
